With the recent Haute Couture shows going on in Paris, it made me think about the Balenciaga exhibition I visited recently at the Spanish Institute in New York.

I had read about the show, curated by Hamish Bowles, and heard about it first hand from my mother who attended the opening. My mother was privileged enough to have attended Balenciaga shows while the couturier was still alive and she recalls the incredible experience.

She described Balenciaga as beyond perfection for him, everything had to be perfect, from the cut of the clothes, to the utterly silent, almost monastic fashion presentations.

When I actually visited the exhibition myself I was struck at the fact that I couldn’t find any seams on his clothing. The stitching was so precise, so perfect that it morphed into the garment. It was just beautiful. If you have a chance to go, then do it. It’s a sublime piece of fashion history.
