Late one night last Fall, while my kids were asleep, I began reflecting on the women who inspire me – not just the fashion girls, but people like Martha Graham, Maria Callas and Sonia Delaunany. They were all brave, strong characters and Sonia Delaunay in particular was the inspiration behind our Fall 2011 collection.

So imagine how thrilled I was to see the work of Sonia Delaunay featured at the Cooper Hewitt Museum during my last visit to New York. Delaunay was a Renaissance woman, abstract painter, business woman, textile designer, and above all a visionary. You can see this immediately when you enter the exhibition which also features her textiles, fashion and photographs.

The pictures of course do not do it justice. She had such an amazing sense of color, and her vibrant combinations are so in tune with what’s happening in fashion today. I feel like she painted to music – everything has a rhythmic grace to it and she has created a whole atmosphere. If you have a chance, go visit and be inspired…

Color Moves: Art and Fashion by Sonia Delaunay is on until June 5, 2011 at the Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York.
